Getting a document notarized is a fairly straightforward process—you go, you sign, you leave. If you’ve never been to a notary though, you might be unsure of exactly what you need to do or bring for your appointment.
The truth is, there’s not much you have to do to prepare. There are just a few things you’ll want to be sure to have with you when you get your document notarized!
The Unsigned Document
Obviously, you’ll need to have your document with you for your appointment. It needs to be completely filled out, aside from the signature, in order to be notarized. You can complete your document there or streamline the process by having it done beforehand. Make sure you know what type of notarization you’ll need too. There are three types of notarization:
- Jurat—to corroborate that the document’s contents are true
- Acknowledgement—to verify that you have signed the document of your own will
- Copy Certifications—to confirm the document is an exact copy of an original (not allowed in all states)
One essential aspect of a notary public’s job is to confirm a document has been legally signed; the other is to verify that it was you who signed it. Therefore, you’re required to present an acceptable form of identification to complete the process.
Accepted ID may vary by state, but generally it will be a state or federally issued document that includes a copy of your signature, a photo, and a physical description (driver’s license, passport, military ID, etc.)
Check with your notary ahead of time regarding their fees so you’re prepared with the right amount. Most states legally cap what someone can charge you for notary services, so if you forget to ask, find out the limit for your state and bring that amount to ensure you have enough for your payment.
